This headline from Sky News U.K. is, of course, wrong. It’s not “racism” that’s causing people to ask for “white” staff who can speak English.
It’s a functioning survival instinct! If whoever is caring for me can’t understand English, then screw it. Get me whitey. Would it be more politically correct to say “Please find me someone for whom English is not a second language”? Yes. But when you’re in the hospital, you don’t care about crafting the perfect, politically correct sentence. YOU JUST WANT DECENT CARE FFS.
Then there’s the fact that DEI has infected MEDICAL school now. DEI means MERIT is no longer the number one consideration. This is has been well and amply documented. It is not arguable.
So DUH.
Go ahead. Call them racist. Call me a racist. I’d do the same damned thing. In fact, I have done the same damned thing. I chose my eye surgeon because he’s a white male over 50. What does that mean? It means he 1. Got into school based on merit. 2. Speaks English as his first language.
I make no apologies for that. THIS. IS. MY. EYES. we are talking about. So names? You want to call me names? HAVE AT IT.

The above is an example of what happens when other organisms see less than we do. But it makes me wonder if we’re not seeing too. What else may be right in front of us that we’re simply not seeing? Are there other creatures among us who can see more things that we can? Perceive more than we can? (Like when a cat fakes you out. Are they? Maybe something was there. Maybe that’s why witches call cats “familiars.”)
That’s what blows my mind.
